We understand that choosing the right mixture of care and education to enable the best transition to school is extremely important. With almost a hundred children across both nurseries leaving us each year to start school, we take school readiness very seriously and feedback from local schools is that we are really good at it! Early phonics, mathematical development and most importantly behaviours such as confidence, curiosity and independence are all nurtured by the team in Rainbows.

We work closely with the local schools, with reception teachers visiting the children prior to transition and also updating us on the latest developments and requirements for attainment and a smooth transition. We hold a Parent Information evening in the Spring where a local Reception Teacher facilitates a session to help parents prepare for this exciting next step and also 1to1 meetings with your child’s key worker, for you to come along and discuss your child’s progress prior to them starting school. Our Rainbows ‘Leavers Party’ also enables children to celebrate their success and marks their transition to the next important stage of their development. Children usually join Rainbows at around 3 years old and from the first time you visit we will work with you to ensure that you and your child are comfortable in our surroundings and you are given as much information as possible to help you make an informed decision. We want you to know you have made the right choice.

Every child is different and therefore you will meet the team to discuss the routine, activities and your insights into your child’s needs at this important stage of their development. With this information we are then able to tailor your child’s introduction to us to best suit both your needs. Our preschool room has been purposefully designed to provide a stimulating environment with a staff ratio of one highly trained Early Years Practitioner to every eight children. The team in
Rainbows, will work with small groups and on a 1:1 basis, helping children make progress towards the early learning goals. With our online Observation System you will have secure access to photos, observations and plans anytime anywhere, ensuring you are always involved and up to date with your child’s learning and progress.

If your child is moving from our Sunshine room, we arrange short visits for them about three weeks before they are due to move. Sunshine room and Rainbows work closely together and often join for play, parties and special events, so they will be familiar with the team and environment prior to joining. However the visits give them some dedicated time which they will spend with their new key worker exploring all the new and exciting resources.

Our preschool has its own separate entrance and consists of 3 indoor areas with direct access onto our large nursery garden and patio.  The messy room is always set up with art, crafts, sand and water.  The other contains a home corner, book corner, construction area and a variety of activities that involve problem solving, turn-taking, early phonics, exploration and discovery. A selection of writing materials is always available so that children can practice ‘mark making’ and emergent
writing.  The children have access at all times to baskets of toys and equipment on height appropriate equipment to encourage them to make independent choices.  We use lots of unusual and natural resources both inside and in our outdoor learning environments to provide plenty of opportunities for children to explore, let off steam and learn from the natural world. Children will also have regular access to a computer and other age appropriate technological equipment.

In our outdoor classroom, we have beautiful bushes and trees and our wooden shelter provide perfect shady areas for play, story and picnics  or just somewhere nice to sit!! Physical activity and fresh air are extremely important for all of us, but we are extremely passionate about engendering a love of exercise and fresh air from the earliest age. To support us in this quest every week children take part in a variety of games and exercises especially selected by our team, we also go out and about in Portishead and have weekly Forest/Beach school sessions led by a fully qualified Forest School Leader. Other activities such as French, Spanish and Tennis, are available for a small fee.

Group times are an integral part of the daily routine, encouraging and enabling children to, share their thoughts and ideas, evaluate the activities they have taken part in or talk about themselves and their families. Making music, singing songs, circle games and story time all form part of the nursery day, as does ‘tidy up time’.

All our meals are freshly prepared on site using locally sourced produce where possible. We cater for all dietary preferences and requirements and will discuss this in depth with you on registration. We have also been awarded a Children’s Food Trust Award for food excellence; please see the separate tab for more details.

For your piece of mind 100% of our core staff are fully qualified and have a Paediatric First Aid certificate.
